What will I study?

Year 12 and 13

• ​Aspects of French-speaking society: current trends in the changing nature of family, the “cyber-society”, the place of voluntary work.
• Aspects of French-speaking society: current issues such as positive features of a diverse society, life for the marginalised and how criminals are treated.
• Artistic culture in the French-speaking world : a culture proud of its heritage, contemporary francophone music, cinema as the 7th art form.
• Aspects of political life in the French-speaking world : teenagers, the right to vote and political commitment, demonstrations, strikes – who holds the power? Politics and immigration.

What do I need to study the course?
GCSE Grade 6 or above (on the higher papers) in the chosen language.

How will I be assessed?
Listening, speaking, reading and writing examinations.​

Where will A Level French lead me?
Students who have studied French at Holy Cross Sixth Form have not only gone on to study a degree in French, but have also taken joint degrees in French with Business Studies or Marketing.  French is essential for translating, interpreting and teaching the language, and also for work as a Linguist within the Diplomatic Service.  French is particularly useful when working for companies trading internationally.  It is valuable within the travel industry, for example, airline cabin crew and ground staff and tour organiser.  Journalists can use their language skills to research and write articles for magazines.  Recruitment consultants recruit linguists globally in a wide range of employment sectors.
