Congratulations to three of our Year 8 students who won the Rotary Youth Speaks Intermediate Competition held at the Methodist Church in New Malden last night. The students delivered an engaging speech titled 'Boys vs Girls, a necessary battle', in which they discussed the underachievement of boys in school. The competition promotes and develops the public speaking skills of young people aged 11-17, calling on their ability to research and plan a topic, as well as presentation and team-working skills. The students will go on to compete in the Youth Speaks District Semi-Final in February next year.
Do you know how much time your daughter spends on an electronic device? What is she accessing? Is she safe?
As staff we are increasingly concerned about the use and impact social media is having on our young adults. We want to work with you as their parents, to make your daughters fully aware of the potential risks this has on their safety, learning and emotional welfare.
It has been brought to our attention that the use of these devices often occurs late at night. CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) has recommended that all young people switch off their devices at least two hours before bed time in order to sleep properly.
Please join us on Wednesday November 28th 7.00-8.00pm at The Holy Cross School to find out the facts about online safety. We are fortunate to have Mr Peter Cowley, who is the ICT and Online Safety Advisor for Kingston and Richmond Boroughs, to offer advice and practical tips for minimising risk and keeping your daughter safe online.
At the end of the evening there will be a workshop with specialists on hand to set up parental controls on electronic devices. Please feel free to bring your devices for the workshop, along with any questions you may have.
